Prodivers Atoll Challenge at The Scuba News

Prodivers is proud to announce its support for The Atoll Challenge

The Atoll Challenge is being held between the 4th and 8th of May, where 6 team members from Prodivers and Ocean Watersports will attempt to kayak around the Lhaviyani Atoll (165 kms) in the Maldives, and in doing so, help to raise awareness and funds for the Maldivian Thalassaemia Society.

Thalassaemia is a genetic blood disorder, which affects the body’s ability to produce red blood cells. The Maldives has the highest incident rate in the world, with 18% of the population being carriers. Thalassaemia patients need regular blood transfusions, following which the blood needs to be ‘cleaned’ of excess iron. One effective method of ‘cleaning’ is through the use of a desferal pump. The Maldives is currently short of approx. 50 pumps for its patients.

The event goal is to raise MVR 1,000,000 (approx. US$ 67,000) to purchase these 50 pumps. Prodivers has already helped to raise over US$ 15,000, the team is training hard, and there are 15 weeks to go! We would like to thnk all our sponsors especially PADI for their 10% contribution to the cause.

Sponsor Information:
In order to help achieve the goal, the Atoll Challenge is relying on the support of corporate sponsorship, as well as the donations of generous guests and visitors to the Maldives.
