Course Overview

Okay, so you’re ready to take the plunge and get your first Scuba Diving certification! The PADI Openwater Scuba Diving course will teach you the basics of Scuba Diving and get you more comfortable/confident with your kit and being underwater. Once you pass this course and receive your certification, you will then be qualified to experience the wonders of the underwater world in almost any country in the world! The amount of time required to complete the course is based on class size, student aptitude, logistical considerations and student performance. The course consists of 16 sessions (6 classroom, 6 confined water and 4 openwater dives).

This course takes place in Clitheroe, Lancashire, UK.

Academic (Classroom)

There are six classroom sessions (including final exam), each lasting a period of approximately 1-2 hours.

Confined Water (pool)

There are six confined water sessions that take place in a swimming pool. It is recommended that you wear a t-shirt to avoid discomfort from the kit chaffing on your shoulders. The confined water sessions will teach you the necessary skills enabling you to go into the Open Water. For comfort and personal hygiene reasons, students are expected to have their own mask and snorkel.

Openwater Dives

The Openwater dives are where you put all the Academic and Confined Water sessions into action. Consisting of one surface session and four dives in the fresh water site or sea.

Course Schedule Options:

Weekly Classes 1 or 2 Nights a Week

The average classroom session size consists of 2-8 students. Confined Water Pool sessions consist of 4-6 students. We can try to schedule Openwater dives at any time to suit you. You also have the option to do the openwater dives on holiday (Contact us).


Openwater Crew Pack –

All Scuba equipment except mask, fins and snorkel.

Course Standards:

The ultimate purpose of the PADI Openwater Scuba Diving course is to provide participants with the elemental skills and knowledge to dive independently and gain experience safely. The course is performance based and is designed to take you through from simple to more complex diving objectives, such as entering the water to achieving neutral buoyancy. Initial Openwater training is based on mastering skills and gaining diving experience at gradually increasing depths.

Any diver who is certified to Openwater level must understand that they are qualified to:

•    Apply the knowledge and skills they are taught during the Openwater course.

•    Procure air, equipment and other services

•    Engage in recreational diving without supervision

•    Plan, conduct and log Openwater dives

•    Participate in the PADI Advanced Course as well as various Specialty Courses


To qualify for the Openwater Diver training an individual must:

•    Be 10 years of age or older

•    Procure air, equipment and other services

•    Have signed the PADI Liability Release

•    Completed the Medical History form
